Finland police investigating deadly mass stabbing in Turku

Two people are dead and several wounded after a mass stabbing Friday in Finland’s western city of Turku that ended when police shot a man in his leg before detaining him.

Authorities were looking for more potential suspects.

Finnish broadcaster YLE earlier reported that several people were seen lying on the ground in Puutori Square in central Turku. On Twitter, police urged people to avoid that part of the city, which is 150 kilometres west of Helsinki.

One person has been “apprehended,” Finnish police said, adding “several people had been stabbed.”

The suspect is in custody and being treated in a hospital after officers shot him.

Finland’s top police Chief Seppo Kolehmainen said it was too early to link the events to international terrorism, according to YLE.

Kolehmainen said “nothing is known about the motives … or what precisely has happened in Turku.”

Finnish Interior Minister Paula Risikko said security is being stepped up across the Nordic country.
