With Olympic spot hanging in the balance, Canadian curlers pushed to the edge at men’s worlds

There was a time, not that long ago, when Canada arrived at the men’s world curling championship and there were those games littered across the schedule you could basically pencil in a win for the Canadian curlers.

There were those “they should” win games — free spaces on the bingo card.

But those days are over. And it’s been proven this week.

Canada is on the verge of missing the playoffs at the event, but more importantly, missing a prime opportunity to qualify for the 2022 Olympics.

  • Watch and engage with CBC Sports’ That Curling Show live (Friday, 7:30 p.m. ET; Saturday 7:30 p.m. ET; Sunday 5 p.m. ET) featuring the men’s curling championship on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

Brendan Bottcher and his team out of Edmonton have been the mark of consistency for years. They’ve been one of the best teams in the world. To make it to four consecutive Brier finals, finally breaking through with a title this year, is no small feat.

But an international event with the weight of the maple leaf pressing down is a different beast entirely. And Bottcher and company are teetering on the edge.

With a 7-4 record and two games left in the round robin, Canada finds itself in a must-win situation Thursday night (9 p.m. ET) against Norway, and then in its last game against Germany on Friday. The top six teams in the round robin advance to the playoffs and qualify for Beijing.

Nothing is easy

It looked like Canada would easily clinch a spot. But then Wednesday happened.

Canada lost to the Russian Curling Federation for the first time at the event. Just a day earlier they lost to Korea for the first time as well.

And then in a stunning collapse Wednesday night, Canada was outscored 7-1 in the last three ends against Sweden to lose 9-7.

It’s gotten uncomfortably tense now.

The rest of the world has been gaining on Canada for years. The rhetoric the past decade was that international teams were gaining on Canada. They’re on the same level as Canada now and the pressure has hit a different levels.

Since the 2018 Olympics, when the Canadians failed to podium for the first time in the history of the Games, there hasn’t been a lot of gold to talk about.

For as dire as the situation has gotten, this is not a time to panic for the Canadians. Bottcher is known for his steely resolve and calm demeanour. He showed it again last night in the post-game interview, his voice steady and his tone relatively optimistic.

“We really need to compartmentalize today. We actually played quite a few really good ends of curling as a team,” Bottcher told reporters. “We made a lot of really good shots. When we get back on the ice tomorrow [Thursday] it’s got to be a brand new game”

We’ll learn a lot about the character of this team in the coming days. And past history shows they’ll meet the moment.

There’s no question it’s been a wild and somewhat wacky bonspiel to this point. Consider where Switzerland, reigning bronze medallist at the Olympics and a formidable opponent, sits. The Swiss are at five losses heading into the last two days of the round robin. Nobody could have predicted that.

It’s almost unfathomable to consider either Canada or Switzerland having to compete in a last-chance Olympic qualifier but here we are.

Niklas Edin scores 4 in the 10th end and lifts Sweden to a 9-7 victory over Canada’s Brendan Bottcher. Sweden sits alone in first place while Canada falls to 6th place. 1:21

Bottcher team resilient

Bottcher’s team knows how to be resilient having lost three consecutive Brier finals, only to rise from the granite ashes this year to win the national championship. The rink is going to have to dig deeper than even before to string together what could become a memorable comeback if it’s able to make it, not only into the playoffs, but a medal game.

But should Bottcher’s team falter the rest of the way though and miss this chance at the Olympics, all is not lost for Canada.

A last-chance qualifier has been scheduled for this upcoming December, with exact dates and a location yet to be announced. There will be anywhere from nine to 11 teams competing and will include either three or four spots, depending on where host China finishes the rest of the way at the men’s world championship.

The Canadian Olympic curling trials are scheduled for late-November in Saskatoon to determine what team would potentially represent Canada at the Games. But who that team would be could get messy.

It’s something Canadian curlers and Canadian curling fans don’t even want to have to consider.

It’s pretty simple to avoid. Just win the rest of the way.

Medical examiner rules Epstein’s prison death a suicide by hanging

Jeffrey Epstein’s prison death has been ruled a suicide by hanging, the medical examiner’s office said Friday.

Epstein, 66, was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City on Aug. 10, touching off outrage and disbelief over how such a high-profile prisoner, known for socializing with powerful people including presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, could have gone unwatched.

The Bureau of Prisons said Epstein had apparently killed himself, but that didn’t squelch conspiracy theories about his death.

Epstein, who was charged with sexually abusing numerous underage girls over several years, had been placed on suicide watch last month after he was found on his cell floor on July 23 with bruising on his neck.

But multiple people familiar with operations at the jail say he was taken off the watch after about a week and put back in a high-security housing unit where he was less closely monitored, but still supposed to be checked on every 30 minutes.

Attorney General William Barr says officials have uncovered “serious irregularities” at the jail. The FBI and the Justice Department’s inspector general are investigating Epstein’s death.

Watch: U.S. attorney general appalled by ‘irregularities’ at Epstein’s jail

U.S. Attorney General William Barr says the Manhattan jail where Jeffrey Epstein was being held “failed to adequately secure this prisoner.” 3:20

Jail guards on duty the night of Epstein’s death are suspected of falsifying log entries to show they were checking on inmates every half-hour as required, according to several people familiar with the matter.

A guard in Epstein’s unit was working a fifth straight day of overtime and another guard was working mandatory overtime, the people said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the lacked authorization to publicly discuss the investigation.

U.S. District Judge Richard Berman, who is in charge of the criminal case against Epstein, asked the jail’s warden this week for answers about the earlier episode, writing in a letter Monday that it had “never been definitively explained.”

The warden replied that an internal investigation was completed but that he couldn’t provide information because the findings were being incorporated into investigations into Epstein’s death.

The Washington Post and the New York Times reported Thursday that the autopsy revealed that several bones in Epstein’s neck had been broken, leading to speculation his death was a homicide.

Chief medical examiner Barbara Sampson issued a statement Thursday in response to those articles, saying: “In all forensic investigations, all information must be synthesized to determine the cause and manner of death. Everything must be consistent; no single finding can be evaluated in a vacuum.”

Lawsuits against estate

The medical examiner’s ruling came a day after two more women sued Epstein’s estate, saying he sexually abused them.

The suit, filed in a federal court in New York, claims the women were working as hostesses at a popular Manhattan restaurant in 2004 when they were recruited to give Epstein massages.

One was 18 at the time. The other was 20.

The lawsuit says an unidentified female recruiter offered the hostesses hundreds of dollars to provide massages to Epstein, saying he “liked young, pretty girls to massage him,” and wouldn’t engage in any unwanted touching. The women say Epstein groped them anyway.

One plaintiff now lives in Japan, the other in Baltimore. They seek $ 100 million US in damages, citing depression, anxiety, anger and flashbacks.

Other lawsuits, filed over many years by other women, accused him of hiring girls as young as 14 or 15 to give him massages, then subjecting them to sex acts.

Cardi B Had the Most Fun Ever While Hanging with Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner

Cardi B just became an honorary member of the Kardashian clan!

The “Be Careful” rapper paid a visit to Kris Jenner’s home where they were joined by Kim Kardashian for some low-key socializing. Naturally, the evening included the trio having some fun with a new filter.

“I look like a different person,” the new mom exclaims in the clip when she sees herself rocking purple lipstick and a different face shape.

“You look so cute!” Kris chimes in with a chuckle.

Cardi chose a green-and-blue Barcelona track jacket for the laidback night. She once again showcased her new blue wig, which she wore in a tiny topknot. Meanwhile, the middle Kardashian sister chose a sleeveless tan top for the evening, which she accessorized with a white fanny pack.

And, like many evenings with this family, the party somehow made its way to their home’s master closet. That’s where the entire group all chose from a few face masks of different members of the Kardashian clan, before posing together while looking into a mirror.

“This is us looking really stupid, you guys,” Kim explained in the subsequent Instagram Story. “Late night, in the closet, looking absolutely stupid.”

Afterward, Cardi hinted that she was so starstruck at the party, it’s possible she ended up taking some extra napkins from the home as souvenirs.

“[I’m] officially [a part] of the rich people club!!” Cardi captioned a photo of herself, Kardashian and Jenner from the Saturday gathering. “I’m not poor anymore mwaaaaahahahaha!! P.S. I’m selling one of @krisjenner napkins on eBay!!”

Meanwhile, Kris shared the same photo, writing, “Late night shenanigans at home with @iamcardib @kimkardashian #love #friendship #family.”

Indian police find 10 bodies hanging, blindfolded in home

Police in India's capital said they found 11 bodies in a home in mysterious circumstances on Sunday, 10 of them blindfolded and hanging from the roof.

The victims belonged to a family and most had lived in one home in Burari village in the northern part of New Delhi, said police officer Vineet Kumar.

Police are investigating whether the victims — four men, three women and four girls — died by suicide or were killed, Kumar said, adding that no suicide note was found.

There were no bullet marks on the bodies of the victims, and there was no sign of forced entry into the house, Kumar said.

Ten bodies, blindfolded by cotton and pieces of cloth, were found hanging from an iron grill used as a ventilator in the home's courtyard, while the body of a 70-year-old woman was lying on the floor of the house, said a police official who spoke on condition of anonymity, in line with department policy.

The family was living in the house for more than two decades, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported. It said the house belongs to a businessman who ran a plywood shop and dairy.

Neighbour called police

The newspaper said that at around 8 a.m. Sunday, a neighbour with whom the businessman used to go for morning walks went to see him and found the door of the house open and the 10 people, including the businessman, hanging. He raised an alarm and people called the police.

"It is a tragic incident. Police are investigating. … Let's wait for their investigation to be over," said New Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who visited the scene. In a video posted on Twitter by Kejriwal's ruling party, the neighbours are heard telling Kejriwal that the family was busy with wedding preparations.

A neighbour of the family said they couldn't have committed suicide, New Delhi Television reported. The neighbour said he spoke to one of the victims Saturday night and found no sign of any stress, the report said.

Indian TV channels broadcast interviews with neighbours who said the family did not have any discord among themselves.

Police official Rajesh Khurana told reporters that all angles were being investigated. "We can't rule out anything," he said.

Inside Meghan Markle's New Life in London: Where She's Hanging Out Ahead of Her Royal Wedding

Meghan Markle is making the most of her new life in London.

Though the Suits actress has lost nearly all of the anonymity she may have had before she and Prince Harry announced their engagement in November, that hasn’t stopped her from exploring her new city. A source tells ET that while “it’s not as easy for Meghan to sneak out” of the cozy home she shares with Harry, she’s been able to make the rounds at a few of her favorite places.

“Meghan is settling into a routine and has a few regular places she frequents to keep looking fresh and relaxed,” the source says. “Like every other woman, she wants to look her best.”

For primping needs like manicures and eyebrow shaping, Markle has been stopping by Nails and Brows in the upscale neighborhood of Mayfair in London. To “relax,” ET’s source says she goes to London beauty gurus Nichola Joss and Sarah Chapman for facials.

When she’s in the mood for a meetup with friends, the source says she does it “under the radar” at Little House Mayfair and Dean Street Townhouse, which is part of the Soho House brand. “It gives Meghan and Harry a place to dine and catch up with their inner circle in a more private setting,” the source explains.

Markle has also been known to dine with friends at the hip restaurant, Berners Tavern, inside London Edition Hotel, where George and Amal Clooney have also been spotted. “One of their go-to favorites is the Brown Cow pub owned by Harry’s longtime mentor and pal, Mark Dyer, in Chelsea. It’s one of the secret hideaways where the couple can meet friends and Dyer always makes sure they’re well taken care of,” the source says.

The soon-to-be royal spends her more casual outings closer to her Kensington Palace digs, often popping over to the local Whole Foods, and heading across the street to the flower stand to pick up her favorite peonies, just a stone’s throw from the Palace, ET’s source reveals.

Markle had quite the outing over the weekend, as a source tells ET that her friends threw her a spa-themed bridal shower at the Soho Farmhouse in London, ahead of her royal wedding on May 19.
