In the last year, consumer-grade VR has seen a lot of ups and downs. The launch of the PSVR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive were a huge step forward for the virtual reality market, but the limited uptake and the overpriced cash grabs have been a bit disappointing to VR enthusiasts. However, we’ve seen a handful of really enjoyable games and apps pop up that won’t cost you a dime.
These free experiences, as cool as they are, probably don’t provide enough incentive to buy into any of the three major VR platforms. But if you already own a headset, or you’re willing to invest in some for-pay software as well, there’s a lot to enjoy here.
The free games available in VR are nice novelties, but we think there’s much more to be said for the free apps that don’t really fall into the gaming category. Google Earth VR can help us feel a connection with people on the other side of the planet. Inhabiting a different place in YouTube or Jaunt can add to the immersion of video, and the creation tools of Blocks can inspire generations of artists and engineers.
Virtual reality has a long way to go, and the limitations are nontrivial. But now that companies around the world are taking VR seriously, both the hardware and software will improve drastically. For now, let’s just get in another round of paintball in Rec Room.
